Workplace Safety And Health Management In Marine Industry

Course Overview

The Workplace Safety and Health (Shipbuilding and Ship-Repairing) Regulations 2008 (Reg. 6(8)
stipulates that: “It shall be the duty of every person not to oversee or supervise any work
(including any process) in a shipyard or on board a ship in a harbor unless he has received
adequate safety and health training to ensure that the work that he oversees or supervises can
be carried out safely

Who should attend this course?

The course is a mandatory training course for individuals who are appointed to supervise the
Workplace Safety and Health at shipyards or the marine industry.
The purpose of this Competency Unit is to enable the WSH Coordinator or Supervisor to
acquire the knowledge and be equipped with the application skills to supervise WSH in the
marine industry. This Competency Unit is designed to focus on building the competency of the
WSH Coordinator or Supervisor in identifying the common hazards and risks in the workplace
and taking appropriate control measures in supervising WSH in the marine industry.
The Competency Unit or Course that can exempt anyone from this unit is the Shipyard
Supervisor Safety Course – SSSC


Course Objectives

PS1 – Explain and interpret salient WSH legislations and other requirements relevant to the
marine industry
PS2 – Describe the WSH duties and responsibilities of a supervisor in marine industry
PS3 – Conduct a briefing on shipyard general safety and explain the Vessel Safety Coordination
Committee (VSCC) and Permit-to-Work (PTW) procedure to shipyard workers and
contractors
PS4 – Identify WSH hazards, evaluate and control risks in marine industry in accordance with
risk management process
PS5 – Carry out WSH inspections in accordance with organisational inspection procedure
PS6 – Conduct incident investigation and prepare report in accordance with legal and other
organisational requirements


Pre-Requisites / Assume Skills and Knowledge

  • Employability Skills (ES) Workplace Literacy level 4 and above.
  • Be able to manipulate numbers at a proficiency level equivalent to ES Workplace
  • Numeracy level 4 and above, equivalent

Assessment

Written Assessment (WA) : 100 MCQ & Case Scenario Base Assessement

Training Methodology

Slides presentation, sharing of best practice and incident. Risk Assessment and Inspection Report

Passing marks

Learner must achieve Written Assessment 65%

Certifications

Upon successful completion of the course a Statement of Attainment (SOA) will be awarded by SkillsFuture Singapore Agency (SSG)
